The Glen Oaks Community College women's basketball team traveled over the Mighty Mac for a weekend of hoops at Bay College's Terrace Bay Hotel Holiday Classic in Escanaba and finished 1-1.
The Vikings ended the trip with a 58-51 victory against North Central Michigan Saturday after an 84-45 loss to Bay College Friday.
Saturday
GOCC 58, North Central Michigan 51
Freshman Braylyn Hernandez led the Vikings with a 15-point effort and classmate Leigha Shudell tossed in 11.
North Central Michigan held a 9-5 lead after the first quarter of play and went on an 8-0 run to start the second period to build a 12-point advantage. Jordyn Partee broke the offensive silence for Glen Oaks and a Shudell 3-pointer helped the Vikings stay within reach during a dry spell. North Central pushed the lead to 24-11 but GOCC hung around at the free throw line and made a couple buckets in the closing stretch of the first half, including a huge triple by Hernandez with 36 seconds remaining, to nearly close the gap. North Central would take a 26-24 lead into intermission.
A Hernandez layup early in the third quarter tied things up, while layups by Partee and Shudell helped GOCC pull ahead 30-28. Zy'Asija Scott, who finished with nine points, hit a jumper, and Hernandez dropped a trio of jump shots to give the Vikings a 38-32 cushion. Hernandez finished the third quarter with a layup for a 41-38 lead.
Scott, Shudell, Hernandez, Partee, Tayler Denton and Lockett all had field goals in the fourth frame to seal the victory.
Partee finished with eight points, Denton and Jayla Parker-Vincent each had six, Lockett had two and Tracy Ackley added a free throw. Scott and Partee recorded seven and six steals, respectively, and Partee grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
