GOCC women cruise to first win
Vikings get it done in Alpena.
With four players in double figures, led by a 16-point night from sophomore Jordyn Partee, the Glen Oaks Community College women's basketball team earned a 71-61 victory at Alpena Friday night.
Partee was 7-for-17 from the field and she grabbed a team-best 17 rebounds for a double-double. She added four assists and six steals to her impressive line. Right behind her was Tayler Denton, who hit 6 of her 13 attempts from the floor, which included three 3-pointers, en route to 15 points. She also contributed six assists and three steals. Zy'Asija Scott finished with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting with four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Leigha Shudell racked up 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting with four boards and five steals.
Glen Oaks led 16-11 with 4:21 to go in the first quarter after a made jumper at the top of the key by Kennedy Lockett. The Lumberjacks rallied with a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 17-16, to close out the first frame.
A Hernandez triple early in the second quarter tied the game at 19-19 and Scott's made drive put the Vikings out front 21-19.
Scott scored on a putback and a bucket by Turpin made it a 25-22 GOCC advantage. Partee stole the ball and found Denton on the outlet for a fastbreak layup to increase the Vikings' lead to 27-22 with 5:25 remaining in the first half. The Lumberjacks went on a 5-0 run to tie the game but Hernandez answered with a jumper in the lane. Hernandez scored six points for the Vikings for the game.
A Scott free throw and a drive by Partee gave Glen Oaks a 32-29 lead. Lockett scored on a layup to make it a 34-31 GOCC lead at the break.
Denton and Scott drained triples to start the second half for a 40-34 advantage. A pair of Partee buckets made it an eight-point cushion with 3:05 left in the third. She would later hit a pair of foul shots to make it a nine-point advantage. A Shudell putback with under a minute left in the quarter gave GOCC a 51-40 advantage.
That lead would be more than sufficient for the Vikings to hold on the rest of the way as they saved their best offensive stretch — a 21-point outburst in the fourth quarter — for last.
Tracy Ackley and Lockett each posted four points, and Turpin finished with two for GOCC.
