Lady Vikings fall to Kennedy King in hoops opener
GOCC led by Lockett and Partee.
The Glen Oaks Community College women's basketball team opened the 2025-26 season Friday at the Roadrunner Classic at Southwestern Michigan College, falling to Kennedy-King 66-54 in a competitive matchup.
Jordyn Partee and Kennedy Lockett each scored 11 points for GOCC, while Zy'Asija Scott and Tayler Denton both poured in 10.
With an 8-1 lead past the halfway point in the first quarter, the Vikings made use of the stripe while struggling from the field to take control. But Kennedy-King heated up by attacking the basket and getting open looks in transition to make it a one-possession game late in the frame. A Jayla Parker-Vincent drive baseline with 30 seconds to go gave GOCC a 14-10 advantage. Scott grabbed a loose ball on the other end and took it the length of the floor to make it 16-10 at the horn.
Kennedy-King tied the game at 20-20 before Denton scored down low to regain an edge for the Vikings. Kennedy Lockett drained a 3-pointer for Glen Oaks at the 4:21 mark for a 25-24 lead and Scott followed with a fastbreak layup to make it 27-24 in favor of the Vikings. Missed opportunities at the foul line prevented GOCC from padding that lead and Kennedy-King converted on a pair of jumpers to regain the advantage, 29-28, at intermission.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle as the programs traded leads until the Statesmen began to take advantage of foul shots for a 48-40 lead with 1:44 left in the stanza. Denton answerd with a triple and Scott knocked down to freebies to immediately cut the deficit back down to a possession, which is where things stood entering the fourth quarter.
Glen Oaks simply ran out of steam in the final 10 minutes, registering just three field goals down the stretch.
Tracy Ackley finished with three points and Shelby McDaniel hit a free throw to round out the scoring for Glen Oaks, which takes on Olive-Harvey in the second day of action at the season-opening tournament.
