Viking women fall to SMC in hoops at home
Glen Oaks competes hard in home finale.
The Glen Oaks women's basketball fell 64-50 in Saturday's home finale against Southwestern Michigan College on a day that recognized four outgoing Viking sophomores. Despite being plagued by injuries and playing with a skeleton roster, the Vikings gave the Roadrunners a much more competitive game than their prior meeting to end January. However, SMC had a 33-23 lead at halftime and extended it to an 18-point advantage by the end of the third quarter.
Glen Oaks cut the deficit to four points in the second quarter after a pair of Sarah DeKoning 3-pointers and a putback by Abby Youmans off an offensive rebound. But the Roadrunners were able to stretch the lead to double figures by the break.
It was the final home appearance for DeKoning, Eliana Wilson, Morgan Kurdziel and Youmans. Kurdziel was the top scorer for GOCC with 13 points. DeKoning and freshman Lilyana Coleman each added 10 points.
Coleman was the top rebounder with nine, followed by eight apiece by Kurdziel and Kamryn Washington. Washington also had five points, Youmans tossed in four, Kylie Quist and Alea Fisher each recorded three, and Kaytlin Smith had a bucket.
Southwestern Michigan's Cameron Thomas led all players with 23 points. The Roadrunners improved to 23-2 overall and 9-2 in Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference play. Glen Oaks dropped to 9-16 and 1-10 in the league.
The season finale for Glen Oaks comes Tuesday evening with a trip to Kalamazoo Valley. The Vikings beat the Cougars 51-48 in their meeting on February 3.
