Lansing claims win in women's hoops
Stars too much for GOCC in the second half.
With just a one-possession lead heading into the second half Wednesday at Glen Oaks Community College, the Lansing Community College women's basketball team controlled the final 20 minutes to finish with a 66-50 victory.
The Stars (19-4, 6-1 MCCAA Western Conference) jumped out to a 9-0 lead early in the first quarter, but the Vikings (9-12, 1-6) got buckets from Kaytlin Smith, Abby Youmans and a 3-pointer by Kylie Quist to make it a 14-7 game heading into the second quarter.
That's when GOCC really started to heat up. Chelsi Zyla, Amanda Barber and Quist (two) all connected on 3-point shots as the Vikings took their first lead of the game with under two minutes to play. Lansing scored the last five points of the frame to regain the advantage, 27-25.
Lansing turned Vikings turnovers into points in the third, boosting its lead to 18. The stars mixed in some field goals from behind the arc to eventually build the lead to 59-34 going into the fourth quarter.
Despite picking it back up offensively and holding Lansing to just seven points in the final stanza, the Vikings couldn't close the gap.
Quist led GOCC with 12 points and four assists, and Sarah DeKoning and Abby Youmans each finished with eight points. Kamryn Washington registered six points, Zyla had five, Smith chipped in four, both Barber and Lilyana Coleman registered three points, and Alea Fisher had one.
Coleman paced the team with seven rebounds, Barber had four assists and Zyla added a pair of steals.
