Lansing women defend home court
Glen Oaks battles but comes up short against conference's top team.
Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference-leading Lansing Community College jumped out to a 12-2 advantage in the first quarter of Monday's women's basketball contest and never relinquished their lead en route to a 59-42 win over Glen Oaks.
The Vikings (8-10, 0-4) pulled within a possession several times in the first half, including when Amanda Barber knocked down a 3-pointer at the 5:12 mark in the second quarter to make it a 17-14 game. Jumpers by Kaytlin Smith and Kamryn Washington kept things within a bucket later in the frame until Lansing (18-3, 5- ) closed out the first half with seven unanswered points for a 28-18 lead.
A Smith field goal and a Morgan Kurdziel 3-pointer got things rolling for the Vikings in the third stanza as the Lansing lead was cut in half. And after a Stars run that pushed the lead back up to nine points, Sarah DeKoning hit a big triple to stem the tide and get to the fourth quarter down 34-27.
The Stars began the fourth with a 3-pointer and a number of successful trips to the foul line to begin stretching the lead and the GOCC offense was unable to keep up.
Smith finished as Glen Oaks' top scorer with eight points, while Kylie Quist and Barber each had seven. DeKoning added six points and Kurdziel was next in line with five.
