Kellogg women pull away in fourth quarter
Vikings drop MCCAA home tilt
After four quarters of trading blows Wednesday at Glen Oaks, the Kellogg Community College women's basketball team dealt the Vikings a 72-60 defeat in Michigan Community College Athletic Association play.
A barrage of 3-pointers by Amanda Barber to start the game put GOCC ahead 9-2, but the Bruins were able to regain a 17-16 advantage after 10 minutes of play. It was never more than a two-possession contest the rest of the first half as Kellogg pieced together a 35-31 lead at the break.
Barber, who led Glen Oaks with 15 points (all on 3-pointers), finished the first half with 12.
The Vikings found themselves down nine points early in the third quarter before Morgan Kurdziel hit a jumper at the top of the key, drove to the hoop for a layup and Barber drained a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 40-38. A Kylie Quist triple and a Kurdziel 3-pointer tied the game at 44-44 late in the third frame.
Kellogg's Cheria Richardson heated up in the fourth quarter, connecting on a pair of 3-pointers and completing another three-point play that helped the Bruins stretch the lead to 15 late in the game.
For Glen Oaks, Quist finished with 12 points on 5-for-11 shooting, Kurdziel was the third player in double figures with 10, and Lilyana Coleman registered eight. Kamryn Washington tossed in five points, Kaytlin Smith added four, Alea Fisher hit a late 3-pointer, Sarah DeKoning recorded two points and Chelsi Zyla hit a free throw for the Vikings.
Kellogg improved to 13-3 overall and 3-0 in the MCCAA. Glen Oaks fell to 8-9 overall and 0-3 in league play.
