Owens evades Vikings
Owens wins women's hoops game on the road
A big run in the third quarter pushed Owens Community College to a 57-43 victory over host Glen Oaks Tuesday night in women's basketball action.
Though the Vikings were outscored 10-0 to start the contest, they battled back to take their one and only lead of the contest, 23-22, with 1:59 to play in the first half. Glen Oaks started closing the gap at the end of the first quarter after Abby Youmans sliced to the bucket, a Kamryn Washington layup and a Lilyana Coleman drive.
In the second frame, Morgan Kurdziel drained a deep jumper, followed by a Sarah DeKoning 3-pointer and a lay-in by Kurdziel. Amanda Barber drilled a triple and DeKoning connected from deep to give GOCC the one-point advantage. The Vikings would enter the locker room down 24-23.
But in the third quarter, Owens (7-5) opened things up with a 19-7 run and used that cushion the rest of the way.
DeKoning and Kurdziel each scored a team-high nine points for Glen Oaks (7-3). Smith finished with six, Barber registered five and Washington ended the night with four. Coleman and Zyla both chipped in three points and Quist finished with two.
