Vikings softball team cruises past Jackson
GOCC sweeps Jets on Pack The Field Day.
Glen Oaks Community College swept a MCCAA Western Conference doubleheader from Jackson College on Thursday at Glen Oaks Community College on Pack The Field Day, winning 15-8 in Game 1 and 13-5 in Game 2. The victories widened the gap in the Western Conference championship race as the Vikings improved to 28-10 overall and 20-4 in league play. Lake Michigan currently sits in second place at 15-7 in the MCCAA.
Game 1
Glen Oaks Community College used a big offensive performance to defeat Jackson College, 15-8, behind freshman first baseman Hannah Brinks, who drove in four runs on three hits, including a grand slam in the third inning.
Jackson College opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-run home run. Glen Oaks answered in the bottom half, taking a 4-2 lead after sophomore shortstop Grace Blanchard singled to left field and freshman catcher Kaidee Gonser doubled to right field, each driving in two runs.
The Jets responded with five runs in the third inning to take a 7-4 lead, highlighted by a grand slam. The Vikings answered in the bottom of the inning and regained control, sparked by Brinks' grand slam to center field.
Jackson College added a solo home run in the sixth inning, but Glen Oaks continued to produce offensively, finishing with 15 hits and drawing 10 walks. Freshman second baseman Maddy Lewis went 4-for-4 to lead the Vikings, while Blanchard, freshman center fielder Cassie Holland, and freshman left fielder Kourtney Zarycki each recorded multiple hits.
Sophomore pitcher Audrie Dugan started in the circle, allowing five runs over 2.2 innings. Brinks earned the win in relief, tossing 4.1 innings while allowing three runs and striking out seven.
Defensively, Glen Oaks played error-free softball and turned a double play. Freshman center fielder Braylyn Hernandez led the team with nine defensive chances.
Game 2
Glen Oaks completed the sweep with a 13-5 victory, powered by a seven-run second inning and a multi-home run performance from freshman center fielder Braylyn Hernandez.
Jackson College took an early lead in the first inning after an error brought home a run, but Glen Oaks answered when Blanchard homered to left field to tie the game.
The Vikings broke the game open in the second inning, scoring seven runs. Freshman first baseman Hannah Brinks singled to drive in a run, freshman catcher Elizabeth Flores added a two-run single, Lewis drew a bases-loaded walk, Blanchard singled in another run, and Lewis later scored after tagging up.
Glen Oaks added four more runs in the fourth inning on three hits. Freshman third baseman Grace Zimmerman singled to drive in a run before Hernandez launched a three-run home run to left field.
Jackson College added two runs in the fifth inning on a home run, but Hernandez answered again in the sixth inning with a solo home run to left field to cap the scoring.
Freshman pitcher Cassie Holland earned the win, allowing six hits and five runs (three earned) over six innings while striking out four and walking one.
Glen Oaks totaled 12 hits in the game, led by Zimmerman's 3-for-4 performance. Blanchard and Flores each collected multiple hits, and the Vikings drew five walks.
