Vikings roll in two wins vs. Ancilla
GOCC sweeps Chargers in MCCAA play.
Glen Oaks Community College swept a Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference doubleheader from Marian Ancilla College, winning both games 13-2 on Saturday at Glen Oaks Community College.
Game 1
Glen Oaks opened the day with a 13-2 victory, fueled by a four-RBI performance from freshman catcher Kaidee Gonser. Gonser doubled in the third inning to drive in two runs and added a two-run single in the fourth.
The Vikings struck first in the second inning when freshman first baseman Hannah Brinks grounded out to score a run. Marian Ancilla tied the game at 1-1 in the third, but Glen Oaks quickly responded.
Glen Oaks took control in the bottom of the third, building a 5-1 lead behind a double from freshman outfielder Kourtney Zarycki, an RBI groundout by freshman infielder Grace Zimmerman, and Gonser's two-run double.
The Vikings broke the game open with an eight-run fourth inning. An error started the rally before sophomore pitcher Audrie Dugan doubled in a run. Zarycki added an RBI groundout, Zimmerman followed with an RBI single, and Gonser capped her day with a two-run single. Freshman outfielder Braylyn Hernandez and freshman infielder Maddy Lewis each added RBI singles in the inning.
Glen Oaks totaled 14 hits, with Hernandez, Lewis, Dugan, Gonser, and sophomore infielder Grace Blanchard each collecting two. The Vikings played error-free defense, with Brinks leading the way defensively.
Freshman pitcher Brooklynn Root earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out nine over five innings . Marian Ancilla was led by Cummings with two hits.
Game 2
Glen Oaks completed the sweep with another 13-2 win, using a fast start and consistent offensive pressure throughout.
The Vikings erupted for seven runs in the first inning. Zarycki delivered a three-run home run to left field, Gonser added a two-run double, Brinks singled in a run, and later scored on a sacrifice to cap the inning.
Marian Ancilla responded in the second with a two-run home run by Fogle, but Glen Oaks answered immediately. In the bottom of the second, Blanchard singled to center, Gonser drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Brinks singled down the left field line, Cassie Holland singled down the left field line, and Lewis singled, while another run scored on a passed ball to extend the lead.
Glen Oaks again finished with 14 hits. Brinks led the Vikings with three hits in three at-bats, while Gonser and Zarycki each drove in three runs. Lewis and Holland both recorded multiple hits.
Root earned the win in the circle, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out nine over five innings.
