Lady Vikings claim two wins in Myrtle Beach
Zimmerman and Hernandez have hot bats.
Tuesday yielded two victories for the Glen Oaks Community College softball team at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Game 1
Glen Oaks Community College 7, Shawnee State College Bears 6
Glen Oaks Community College built an early lead and held off a late rally to defeat Shawnee State College 7-6.
The Vikings struck first in the top of the first inning. Freshman Kourtney Zarycki (LF) drove in a run on a groundout, sophomore Grace Blanchard (SS) tripled down the right-field line to score one, and freshman Grace Zimmerman (3B) singled to left field to extend the lead to 3-0.
Glen Oaks added two more runs in the second when freshman Maddy Lewis (2B) and Zarycki each delivered RBI singles to push the advantage to 5-0.
Zimmerman paced the offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Lewis, freshman Elizabeth Flores (RF), and Zarycki each collected multiple hits as Glen Oaks totaled 13.
Shawnee State chipped away in the later innings and closed the gap to one run, scoring on a single, double, sacrifice fly, single and another sacrifice fly, but the Vikings held on.
Freshman Brooklynn Root (P) earned the win after allowing six runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings while striking out three and walking two. Freshman Madi Hosbein (P) worked in relief, and sophomore Audrie Dugan (P) recorded the save.
Game 2
Glen Oaks Community College 5, Delta College Pioneers 4
Glen Oaks completed the sweep with a 5-4 win over Delta College later Tuesday.
The Vikings fell behind 1-0 in the second inning after Delta College scored on an error, but Glen Oaks answered in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Braylyn Hernandez (CF) singled and freshman Elizabeth Flores (C) followed with a run-scoring single to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead.
Glen Oaks added three runs in the third inning. Hernandez singled down the left-field line to score a run, Flores followed with another RBI single, and a Delta College error allowed another run to cross the plate.
Delta College attempted a comeback, scoring twice in the fourth and once in the sixth to trim the deficit to 5-4, but the Vikings held on.
Hernandez led Glen Oaks from the bottom of the lineup, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Flores added two RBIs as well, while freshman Hannah Brinks (1B), freshman Kaidee Gonser, and Hernandez combined for four hits from the lower portion of the lineup.
Sophomore Audrie Dugan (P) earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits over four innings while striking out three and walking three. Freshman Cassie Holland (P) pitched three innings of relief to secure the victory.
Delta College totaled five hits and stole eight bases in the game.
