Koenig ends Glen Oaks golf career at championship
Sophomore Cole Koenig among those dropped from the National Championship field due to weather.
Glen Oaks sophomore Cole Koenig's golf career ended this week earlier than planned as inclement weather not only wreaked havoc in the Joplin, Mo., area, but on the field at the NJCAA Division II National Championship at Twin Hills Golf & Country Club.
Thunderstorms throughout the first two days of competition produced numerous delays. And as the forecast was not expected to get any better for the final two rounds, organizers opted to implement a rule where cuts would be made in order to thin out the field in an attempt to complete all four rounds.
As a result, Koenig did not get to participate Thursday and Friday. He shot rounds of 86 and 80 over the first two days. He was one of 28 players to be eliminated in the controversial decision.
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College was the team champion with a four-day total of 1170, edging runner-up Kirkwood by three strokes.
Kirkwood's Grant Greazel shot 3-under par for the tournament to win the individual crown. Right behind him was teammate Nathan Bratanata, who tied for second at 2–over with Mississippi Gulf Coast's Peyton Russell.
