Koenig qualifies for Division II National Championship
GOCC men's golf team finishes regional play fourth overall.
Despite shooting its best round of the tournament Tuesday at Bedford Valley Golf Club in Battle Creek, the Glen Oaks Community College men's golf team finished one spot away from qualifying a second straight year for the NJCAA Division II National Championship.
Instead, the Vikings ended the 2024 campaign fourth overall with a team total of 964 to finish the Region 12 Championship. The top three squads moved on, led by winner Grand Rapids (952). Oakland was runner-up with 956 and Muskegon took third with 961.
Glen Oaks sophomore Cole Koenig, however, will be making the trip to Joplin, Mo., for next week's Division II National Championship at Twin Hills Golf & Country Club May 21-24. Koenig shot an 8-over-par 80 Tuesday and he carded rounds of 77 (5-over) and 74 (2-over) Monday to finish tied for fifth overall. The top two individuals not on qualifying teams earned berths in the championship. Koenig tied for second among that group to move on.
The low round of the day for the Vikings was a 77 by sophomore Hayden Goodman, who finished tied for 10th overall. Glen Oaks and Muskegon took turns occupying the third qualifying spot all day, but the Vikings ended up three strokes back with 964.
Both Koenig and Goodman were named to the All-Regional Team.
