Lansing men best Glen Oaks
Despite game-high from Moore, Vikings fall in MCCAA opener
An extremely deep Lansing Community College men's basketball team thwarted the Vikings' best efforts Saturday as the Start recorded a 108-88 home victory vs. Glen Oaks to start Michigan Community College Athletic Association play.
Led by a 25-point effort by Zander Woodruff, who was named MCCAA Western Conference Freshman of the Year last winter, the Stars improved to 11-4 overall after a 70-point second half. The first 10 minutes of play resulted in a 14-9 Glen Oaks lead, but Lansing started to head up over the next three minutes and, following a Woodruff triple, LCC would take a four-point advantage and eventually build a 38-30 halftime lead. A 3-pointer by Glen Oaks freshman Kelvion Brown, a jumper by classmate Jordan Lomax and a field goal by sophomore Amauri Moore helped Glen Oaks keep the deficit to single digits late in the half.
A bucket by sophomore Akin Smith, who led all scorers with 28 points, and three free throws and a jumper by Brown early in the second half got the Vikings to within five, but that's as close as the visitors would get, slipping to 8-7 overall for the year.
The Vikings had a solid shooting night, going 34-for-54 from the field (63 percent) and 11-for-18 from 3-point land (61.1 percent). But a fresh LCC squad, which had 17 players see minutes and 15 players score, hoisted 16 more shots and knocked down 42 of them, including 11 triples. Both squads finished with 30 rebounds.
Smith went 11-for-13 for the night and 6-for-7 from deep for Glen Oaks. He also secured six boards and a steal. Moore racked up 19 points and seven rebounds, and both Brown and Darius Styles had 12 points.
Glen Oaks is back in action Wednesday at Marian University's Ancilla College for a 7:30 p.m. league contest.
