GOCC baseball splits with Lake Michigan
Vikings win opener on Sophomore Day.
Glen Oaks baseball split with Lake Michigan College Thursday in the Vikings' final home doubleheader of the spring 2024 campaign. GOCC took a tight 4-3 victory in game one, while the Red Hawks secured a 14-4 result in game two. Sophomores Andrew Thorpe, Sam Dunlavy and Brody Wardenburg were honored for their two years with the program in their final appearance at home.
In the first contest, the Vikings went ahead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Andrew Thorpe had an RBI single to bring home Jackson Stewart. A Peyton Simmons double moved Thorpe to third, where he was knocked in by a Brody Wardenburg single. LMC got one back in the top of the fourth inning, but the Vikings matched in the bottom half as a Brayden Clark RBI single plated Andrew Onuegbu.
Lake Michigan College rallied with two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3. In the bottom half, Onuegbu led off with a triple, then a Clark sacrifice fly brought him in for the clinching run.
Glen Oaks outhit LMC 9-4 in the game. Clark, Thorpe, and Onuegbu each had two hits. Brady Mescher was the starting pitching, tossing 5.2 innings with one strikeout, four hits allowed, three runs, two earned runs, and two walks. Thorpe pitched the remaining 1.1 innings clean in relief, striking out two.
The Red Hawks raced out to a 10-0 lead by the end of the third inning in Game 2. Glen Oaks got four back in the fourth inning, but LMC matched that in the fifth to win via the run rule after five innings.
The Vikings were outhit 14-3 in the second game. Noah Reiter had a two RBI single. Wardenburg and McCullan Greene both had a hit and RBI.
Thursday's results leave Glen Oaks at 5-18 in the MCCAA Western Conference and 8-34 overall. The Vikings play a doubleheader at LMC Saturday to wrap up the regular season.
